Flying wrecks for President Traian Basescu

While trying to get two more airplanes for official flights, Traian Basescu might only get two airplanes that are on the verge of being put to scrap.

Romavia might buy two A310-325 airplanes from Tarom. The planes have been taken out of use four years ago, in order to use them as official planes needed for the flights of the President and the Prime Minister, according to Mediafax agency.

The two aircrafts were bought back in 1992 and were used for operating long distance courier flights (New York, Beijing, Montreal, Chicago, Bangkok) before being put out of use in 2003. A few months ago, the two planes needed a series of capital repairs in order to be used again. Tarom had used three such aircrafts, one of which was involved in the catastrophic events in 1995 at Balotesti.

The repair expenses are estimated at about 100 million lei (over 30 million euros), to which 100 million more are added for to modifications, constant repairs, insurance, spare parts and maintenance personnel training.
