EVZ EDITORIAL: Basescu, alone in the rape field

MIRCEA MARIAN: "It was pure luck that, in some lost villages from Giurgiu, two men were beaten, shot and hit with an axe, and another lost an eye."

Without these incidents, we would have been killed by the boredom of the electoral campaign for the local elections. If the officials from Iepuresti would not have called bodyguards from Bucharest, to beat up the candidates, we would have remained with only one interesting competitor who is capable of producing news: Traian Basescu.

The politicians who appear like they don't want to win low quality debate - this is the show we are getting since the 2 of May. In 90% of the electoral posters we see the same smile of the same candidate: a 50 years old businessman, a little bit overweight and with his right hand pointing the audience. There are not any real signs that the politic scene will come to life, as we approach election day.

The media also missed this campaign. We are ask imperatively for "debates on projects", but I doubt that it is a journalist who even read the programs of the candidates from his city. The competition of the barons who are running for the leadership of the regional councils escaped almost completely the central media attention. The entire interest is focused on the three candidates for the Capital City Hall. We weren't interested to find out, for example, who could be member of the Bucharest General Council. A dumb law, which denies TV stations to organize electoral debates on weekends, is stopping the informations flow that should reach the voters.

In these conditions, the only one who plays - and plays well - is Traian Basescu. We like it or not, the man is all over the field and he manages to produce news. He takes Blaga for a coffee, for the people to remember who is the PLD candidate. He grants an interview to Bogdan Chiriac, even though, until recently, he nicknamed him "the competitive walrus". He causes amazedness, by saying that him and Tariceanu agreed very well on the matter of extern policy. He launched a strong attack on the rape crops, which attracted his attention while flying by helicopter to Neptun. Basescu seems the only candidate who is truly committed to the electoral campaign.

I can't understand why do we have such a dull campaign. At the elections for the European Parliament, I understood : it was a minor competition, and the political leaders didn't want to be exiled in Bruxelles. The Referendum for the uninominal vote didn't attract voters, because the theme was too abstract. But now, after decentralization, more and more money goes to the local communities, so the stake is big. Maybe it's about fixings, and the territory has been already divided, at the green table, between the important parties. Or, this is all the political class is able to offer us: some mediocre people, who avoid the media because they know that will cause the voter's disgust. On the short term, Basescu seems the only politician who knows how to attract the voter's interest, even when he has no other concern than the one about the surface cultivated with rape.
