Romanian Authorities Shut Down Arpechim Refinery

Shutting down the largest refinery in Romania may bring about gas  price hikes, endangers the petrol-chemical industry and causes losses to suppliers of salt, calcium and energy.

Arges County Environment watchdog imposed Petrom to shut down Arpechim, because the oil maker did not  modernized its equipment according to EU standards towards waste control and waste management.

Petrom  management said that some of the investments on modernizing the refinery were carried out  integrally and thus the environment watchdog’s decision is unjustifiable. The company representatives said they invested more than EJUR60 million in the last years on modernizing the refinery , according to safety environmental norms.

The social effects of  shutting down the refinery may be dramatic and the economic ones are already showing.
