The Nokia Romania administration is confronted with a request that could only seem peculiar to them: the workers syndicate asks for bonuses because it’s Easter.
The workers solicited a bonus that would cover up shopping expenses for Easter to John Guerry, the general manager at Nokia Romania. The request is a “traditional” practice among Romanian employers.
The syndicate leader of Cartel Alfa Cluj, Grigore Pop, had a previous talk with Guerry and asked him wether the factory’s administration gave something the women employed on the 8th of March. Guerry replied that the management gave “many kisses” to the women, on the occasion.
Pop added that even the smallest companies in the region give their employees gifts on Easter. These “gifts” are at least 100 lei (about 28 euros), the syndicate leader added.
For the moment, the workers at Nokia have a syndicate of 20 people, but it’s expected that their number would increase soon at about 350 people.
“John Guerry said he won’t reject the proposal and that he must speak to his bosses about it”, Pop added. Nokia officials did not give a straight answer on the matter, Monica Alb, the factory’s PR manager said.
„Mister Pop tried to bring out the local culture, the way the people live and that their customs are during work and in their free time” Alb said.
Nokia announced a total investment of 60 million euros in the factory at Jucu, near the city of Cluj-Napoca.
