Magyar oil could slip through OMV's fingers

The European Commission suspended, at the begining of the week, the investigation on the OMV group offer for the takeover of the Hungarian company MOL.

The Commission asked more informations from the Austrian group, and according to Reuters, the informations failed to appear. "We have asked for additional informations that were not provided, and we decided to stop the analysis process. Te investigations will be back on it's course after we will receive the requested datas", said an EC spokeperson.

Previous to the decision, the European executive started a consulting process of the companies. On the Romanian market, where OMV and MOL would pass the 35% share limit, the possible takeover will break competition reglementation. The Austrian group bought Petrom in 2004, and MOL, also in 2004, acquired the British-Dutch company Shell gas stations.

The deadline for the takeover evaluations over the competition problems was already prolongued until the 22 of July. OMV holds 20% from MOL and wanted to takeover the entire group, but the company and the Hungarian Government opposed the transaction. OMV evaluates MOL at 20.7 billion dollars.
