EVZ EDITORIAL: When will Nastase go to prison?

Mircea Marian: "I know that it's a rhetorical question, to which everybody has the same answer: never."

Nastase is the archetype of a certain type of politician: with a communist past, but with a good behavior notice issued by CNSAS, high statesman under many regimes and got very rich, without making himself clear on how did he managed to do this from his budgeter wage. The correct question would have been: will a character, only one, from the top of the Romanian politic, ever answer for his deeds of corruption in a penal trial?

After 2004, DNA prosecutors tried and started to open file after file. Immediately, the System, which doesn't allow somebody from the political elite to end on the other side of the Rahova gates, started to function. Magistrates from the High Justice Court, judges from the Constitutional Court, Prime Minister Tariceanu, the former minister of justice Tudor Chiuariu and, finally, an army of parliamentarians - all have put their shoulder to the common effort to delay forever the trial, on the background, of Nastase. For three years, his files went from one institution to another. In parallel, the PSD leader used his relationships from the media to intoxicate the public opinion and to demonstrate that he is the victim of Traian Basescu's revenge. Entire years, he lied without shame thet the file of the Zambaccian house would refer only to some window frames. Now, when the analysis of the prosecutors become public, his false public statements were revealed. According to DNA, the Nastase family raised the bunker-villa from Zambaccian without paying those whi made the project or built it. In exchange, the Zambaccian volunteers had access to contracts payed from public money. We are passing over the fact that the prosecutors analysis states that Nastase had a villa in the center of Bucharest also, on Christian Tell street. But the man had resources - to install a bunker for his chickens from Cornu.

This is the character which is defended by parliamentarians, politicians and magistrates: obsessed by his own security, greedy and eager to show his wealth - from hunting weapons of tens of thousands of euro to an eclectic collection of furniture and paintings. Elena Ceausescu had more taste than him. The individual doesn't realize that he is not above Traian Basescu, who he considers a troglodyte and he despises for his ignorance. But Nastase is representative for the political class, and almost everyone from this world admire and feel close to him.

So, will a politician like Adrian Nastase ever go to prison? No, because people like him made the Constitution and the laws so that they will be protected, and in the judiciary system they placed their friends. They have won the battle with the public opinion, because the voters gave up the hope of the high statesmen answer in front of the law. At the local elections, Oprişan, Mazăre, Falcă şi Vanghelie were re-elected with overwhelming majorities. I am almost convinced that, in November, Năstase, Mitrea, Păcuraru and Şereş will receive, from the electorate, the sin forgiveness and the well deserved immunity.
