Ioana Lupea: "As long as the corrupt alliance between teachers, pupils and parents is satisfied, the school becomes optional, and its modernization impossible".
To consider Cristian Adomnitei responsible for the bankruptcy of the Romanian school is too much. He can't be responsible for the Bac catastrophe, the result of an lasting anti reform in the field. He hadn't enough time. But he will be guilty of crime against education if he will not gave to justice the teachers, principals and corrupt school inspectors. Like the teacher Gheorge Radulescu is asking him, since yesterday ex-liberal, who saw the irregularities from the final high-school examination from Hunedoara.
A standard product of the superficiality of local education and a bad example for the children who are seeing that you can become minister without expressing yourself correctly in the native language, Adomnitei has in front of him an offer from destiny, like Andrei Plesu would say. Maybe to become important by assuming the anti corruption fight in school, as he took upon himself, with an unbelievable courage and against the devolving Romanian Academy, the list of subjects for the oral exam at the Romanian language. The courage reserves must have been finished then. This time, he preferred, like all the other responsible, to hide the dirt under the rug and accuse, by falling in disgrace, the political sabotage of the Bac.
Corruption, of which Cristian Adomnitei pretends it doesn't exists, is in the difference between the promotion percentage at the Bac (80%) and that of the teenagers who can't read and understand a text at first sight (53%). Th scandal from Sighet, where a school principle and a pupil are investigated for bribery, is symptomatic. Between teachers, pupils and their parents a corrupt alliance has been formed which purpose it's to promote illiterates, saving at the same time the reputation of the Romanian school.
It's easier for the parent of an illiterate child to bribe, with the clear conscious that he did what he could, other than help him or follow his scholar activity. The poor payed teacher is completing his minor incomes with bribes, assuring, with the promotion, his competence prestige. The child who is incapable to read and understand a text will enter a high-school and college, progressing from a simple illiterate to an illiterate with an university degree, future sly person or minister. What good does the effort to teach or study when all can be resolved with a "little bribe" in money, goods, "proceedings funds" or coaching. As long as the corrupt alliance between teachers, pupils and parents is satisfied, the school becomes optional, and its modernization impossible.
We can imagine that at the 53% percentage of functional illiterateness the schools benches are full of bribing-pupils. Thousands? Tens of thousands? For our kids, corruption is an ordinary fact of life - an easy mean for their purposes. In 20 years, many of them will represent in the EU statistics the under prepared labor force of an uncompetitive Romania. Others will complete the population of penitentiaries. And some of them will be corrupt clerks, corrupt parliamentarians, corrupt ministers. Later, we will bribe them.
