Ioana Lupea: “The Democrat-Liberal Party (PDL) needs a glorious victory in Bucharest local elections, a fast and absolute victory, just like a blitzkrieg”.
By humiliating the opponent in first round of elections, the Capitals success would spread like a shock wave throughout the large Romanian cities and would also give a better chance for candidates in the second round of elections. A blitzkrieg victory in the Bucharest elections would influence the overall fondness in the fall elections for the Parliament.
PDL will show up as a winning party, and the majority of voters, by tradition, will follow the leader due to the simple and human need to stand along winners. A single candidate could issue such an easy general victory, with a clear impact over both local and general electoral results.
This person is, according to the inside studies of every party, Liviu Negoita, who publicly said that he won’t abandon the Sector 3 Hall, out of because of the party’s needs.
Basescu’s crushing victory in the first round of elections for the Bucharest City Hall, has helped the former Justice and Truth Alliance gain the support of the rest of the Capital, as well as the support of large cities such as Arad, Cluj, Braila or Piatra-Neamt. A deja-vu, in the future elections, would probably influence the fate of the elections in cities like Iasi or Constanta, which are olf fortresses of the Social Democrat Party (PSD), and are a high stake for the pro-presidential party.
Dumitru Oprea, a Rector that plays the part of a candidate for Iasi town hall, might receive a lot of mistrust from the same people that have sent him at the European Parliament last fall. Dorel Onaca, who is best known for migrating between several parties, will also have an almos impossible task in Constanta, because of his own past which doesn’t make a moral candidate from him, even if he is a candidate for a party that pretends to be at the top of political ethics. Instead, the current mayor, Radu Mazare, has put out his cigar and started building apartments at the price of a matchbox for young people in Constanta.
The winning image that Traian Basescu still holds and the overall result of Justice and Truth Alliance in the 2004 elections have weighed a lot in the parliament and presidency votes. That’s why the PDL cannot afford a small victory, or even worse, a defeat in the Bucharest City Hall vote that will take place this year. Both options would badly damage the image of the pro-presidential party, whose polls still don’t meet the expectations.
Adrian Videanu, the present Mayor that is most hated for that which he managed to do, rather than for what he didn’t accomplish, might struggle to beat Marian Vanghelie, the worst option given by the social democrats. And Vasile Blaga might win the City Hall in the second round of elections, against an adversary like Sorin Oprescu, the guardian doctor for the Social Democrat Pary. Oprescu’s image is rather associated with the Romanian hospitals than with the party lead by Mircea Geoana, who is still pretty much disliked in Bucharest.Yet, Oprescu isn’t hated like Marian Vanghelie, or irritating like Victor Ponta.
PDL needs a Traian Basescu-like victory. Unfortunately for the party, Liviu Negoita, whom is seen as the next mayor in Bucharest by Traian Basescu himself, is stubborn about stayng in the third sector of the Capital.
