CBS Corp which has online video-distribution partnerships with the internet TV startup Joost, AOL, Microsoft and others — expects its shows to be available that way as early as the summer, a senior executive said.
Shannon Jacobs, who is vice-president of communications for the New York-based media giant, offered the time frame in an interview with CBC News Online on Friday.
Jacobs added that the time frame was not definite. However, it would seem to lend support to speculation by industry observers who have been predicting Netherlands-based Baaima NV would launch Joost in the summer.
CBS announced the creation of the CBS Interactive Audience Network on Thursday, saying it would offer its content through Joost — which has promised to offer a "TV-like experience" along with online features such as instant messaging, message boards and news feeds — as well as a dozen other companies.
The agreement means that, if Joost successfully launches, CBS will become the first major U.S. network to offer television shows free through a broadcast-quality, on-demand streaming video service.
