One in four Romanians say that their standard of living worsens from year to year, according to a poll accomplished by Daedalus Consulting in January and quoted by Realitatea TV. About 28% of the urban inhabitants stated that their life was worse in 2007 compared to 2006, according to the study published by Daedalus Consulting. Nevertheless, the figures show that more Romanians manged to buy a car or invest in a home.
Almost 28% of the urban respondents said that their life was worse in 2007 compared to 2006. The precedent poll stated that 37% of the people that live in the cities had a better life in 2006 than in 2005, and only 20% felt their standard of living had worsen.
About 15% from the urban inhabitants say that the amount of money they earn is not sufficient not even for the minimum needs. A year before, 16.5% of the respondents were in this position. At the same time, the number of people that afford to buy expensive goods without renouncing other aquisitions has dropped: from 18.9% to 14%.
More credits
Even if the Romanians perceprion is that their life standard has deteriorated, the figures show that more Romanians have been able to buy a car or invest in a real estate property. The number of people that bought a car reached 17% in 2007, from 14% in 2006. At the same time, the aquisitions of new cars raised, and for the second hand cars the demand stayed constant. More people manged to buy land: 32% in 2007 compared to only 25% in 2006.
The number of Romanians that received a credit from a bank has grown also, from 37% in 2006 to 39% in 2007. Credits for individual needs stayed at a high level.
Approximately 12% of the people that bought differnt items from stores made installments, compared to 9% in 2006. Credit installments could be one of the factors that cause Romanians to feel they have a worse life. At the same time, part of the credits financed the aquisitions of cars or land properties. On the other hand, wages registered an increase in the last years. According to statistics, the medium net wage raised from 866 lei in 2006 to 1.043 lei in 2007. The Government blames the perception
"In general, about a third of the population says that it's standard of living is worse. (...) All the statements from a poll are the inhabitants perceptions" explained sociologist Alfred Bulai, head of the Agency for Government Strategy. Human perceptions are influenced by a sum of factors.
One of these factors could be the electoral year, when the unions make more demands regarding wages. "Pressures are being made and the background image is similar to last year's situation", says Bulai, adding that "the image of the entire society is more acid".
Another factor that influence Romanians perception is the comparison to the people that surround them, fueling the increase of their demands, while possibilities stay low. Bulai warns that the credits boom could have a devastating effect over a family.
