Traian Basescu is making steps towards the third Republic

After many public "threats" about modifying the Constitution, president Traian Basescu summoned yesterday, at the Cotroceni Palace, a commission of specialists for a critic analysis of the Fundamental Law.

"I am interested in a point of view about what should be revised in the Constitution", explained the head of state to the "group of neutral specialists" called to "take a look at the Constitution", to observe "the deficiencies" and propose the parliament, "in a reasonable period", "the possibilities of disbanding the crisis".

"Is clear that this last three years have shown consistent deficiencies of the Constitution", said the president to the specialists, assuring them that he read "some" of "the quite critical papers" on these theme. "We are perfectly right", approved him the head of the commission, professor Ioan Stanomir, guaranteeing "the absence of any political partisanship".

The Constitution after Basescu

"We are not discussing the possibility of writing a Constitution, it's not my job or of any commission, it's the job of the parliament", tried Basescu to temper the parties, close-mouthed to the idea of revising the Constitution. At the first meeting, the president asked the commission "a point of view" about the administrative-territorial division in counties, which he considers out of date, suggesting a regional distribution.

Beyond this first official example, Basescu sustained constantly, more actively after the ban, that a decision must be imposed on the form of governing: presidential republic (with more power for the president) or parliamentary and he proposed the variant of a parliament with a single chamber. Another sensible topic which led to a temporary block of some ministries was the actual form of division of the executive power between the head of state and the government.
