The official visit of the German head of state Horst Kohler in Romania gave President Basescu the opportunity to lobby for the entering of the Moldavian Republic in the EU.
Basescu asked Kohler to analyze the possibility that in the project of a future extension, the Republic of Moldavia will be included too. Before becoming president, Horst Kohler was president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and of the International Monetary Fund.
The connections of the president Kohler with Romania are old, even if he was born in Poland. His mother’s family, with Austrian origins, lived in the Brasov area, while his father lived in Basarabia, when this region was a part of Romania. Even the German president said that his parents were fluent in Romanian.
