Romanian US POWs Released in Iraq

The two Romanian citizens working in Iraq who were arrested and indicted of espionage, were released this morning, according to official sources.

Carpenter  Adrian Ganceanu (age 39 ), from  Toplita and electrician  Nelu Ilie (aged 41), from  Galati, working for an US Army contractor, who were indicted for esipnage and detained three months in Iraq were released this morning.

A spokesman from the Romanian Foreign Ministry  or MAE confirmed the story.

Yesterday, MAE spoke for the first time about the case.  On November  7, last year, Romanian authorities were notified by Al-Morrell Development, the two Romanians’ employer, that two of its workers were arrested on grounds of unauthorized filming and taking pictures inside a  US military base . 

The two Romanians were transferred at a prison near Mosul. They denied the accusations but admitted to beach internal regulations of the a US military base.

US authorities confiscated their equipment and investigated the circumstances following the incident. An official of the Romanian Embassy in Iraq visited the two and noticed they have no health problems and the detention conditions were acceptable.

The news about the Romanians was first published by EVZ a few days ago and launched an media frenzy both locally as well as internationally.
