SILVIU SERGIU: "«We're losing the elections anyway, but we must lose them well»"
The owerflowing sincerity in these words spoken by Marian Vanghelie - the first destroyer of the Romanian language, the terror of conjugation and passive voice - could be the key in solving the mistery that surrounds the eventual assignment of Miron Mitrea as PSD candidate to the Bucharest Mayoralty.
"The mayor that is" has a point. I don't think that any wise PSD member imagines that the party can win Bucharest. There are some that want PSD to embarasse itself, to take a tiny procent, this way the election's results will not damage their position in the party. They are guided by the adage: "We're losing the elections anyway, at least lose them with purpose".
It's the case of Mircea Geoana and Marian Vanghelie. The two would accept, i think, aunt Tamara's candidate-ship in order to block Sorin Oprescu. "The Doctor" has chances to obtain a good result at the local elections and, in consequence, to become a real threat for them.
An INSOMAR poll, published by "Evenimentul Zilei", shows that Sorin Oprescu leads the top of trust in the Capital's inhabitants opinion. Oprescu has 46.9%, a result that crashes Vasile Blaga, credited with 24.7%. With this advantage on his side, "The Doctor" should be, obiously, sustained to candidate. Only that Geoana, Vanghelie, Mitrea or Hrebengiuc are fearing that Oprescu could obtain a conssistent enough ballot that could modify the actual order in PSD.
Because the Oprescu-Mitrea struggle for Bucharest's candidate-ship is in fact a battle between the groups of Iliescu-Nastase and Geoană-Vanghelie- Mitrea-Hrebenciuc. Iliescu and Nastase hope that by sustaining Oprescu they could return as the party's top leaders. And, who knows, they could, in a short time, take over the power from their opponents.
Iliescu and Nastase are thirsty for revenge. Most definitely Iliescu didn't forget the treason made by Mitrea and Hrebengiuc in April 2005, when they called him to be president and threw him away like you do with a broken tooth. Undoubtely, Nastase didn't forget that Mitrea, when trying to save his own skin, preffered "to make politics with DNA attorneys rather than his party colleagues", as he publicly accused him. I am convinced that Mitrea is not going to be a hit in Bucharest. Not in the city that, in 2004, voted to destroy corruption. If they bring up Mitrea, they remind the voters of the PSD "brave actions" from 2000-2004. But maybe Mitrea knows he doesn't stand a chance. He knows, and he is fine with it. And PDL is fine with it also. I honestly believe that if Mitrea enters the Bucharest race, Blaga will came out a clear winner.
But maybe, mortal Mitrea wants to please Zeus and win his peace in front of the attorneys. It's hard to believe that Mitrea is running for mayor to ruin PLD's chances, to annoy Basescu, to expose himself, risking to face problems in his law cases. A smart politician, with law troubles, won't bind his head unless it hurts. And Mitrea is defenetly not a "blockhead".
