The Capital takes a left

The Capital takes a left

For the first time after the Revolution, the right has lost the Capital Mayoralty, on the background of a small mobilization at the ballots. The results of the 21:00 exit-polls gives the independent Sorin Oprescu as winner of the general mayor seat, in front of the PDL candidate, Vasile Blaga. According to the exit-poll made by INSOMAR and ordered by Realitatea TV, PDL discounts Adriean Videanu's term: 54.6% of the Bucharest inhabitants voted with Oprescu and 45.4% with Blaga.

Similar results were released by CCSB for Antena 3: Oprescu - 54.5%, Blaga 45.5%.

A similar defeat of the right, but at a smaller scale, it's already outlined in Sector 4, where the mayoralty won in 2004 by the Alliance D.A. will go to, after yesterday's elections, the PC candidate Cristian Popescu Piedone (63.8%).

In the other three sectors of the Capital for which a second round was organized, the actual mayors were elected: Andrei Chiliman (PNL) - 57% for 1, Marian Vanghelie (PSD) - 57% for 5, şi Cristian Poteraş (PDL) - 56,5% for 6. Here also, from four finalists, PDL remained with only one mayoralty.

Oprescu, mayor after two failures

Even though PDL obtained 24 of the 55 terms from the general council, Traian Basescu's "Bulldog" wasn't able, according to the estimations, to recover the advance of 3.000 votes of Ion Iliescu's "Doctor".

Oprescu's advantage was maintained during the day, partial results of the exit-polls varying between 51% to 49% and 54% to 46%.

The current independent Sorin Oprescu, supported in plain sight by PSD, will be the mayor of Bucharest after two failed attempts under the PDSR logo. The doctor lost the mayoralty in 1998, in front of Viorel Lis (CDR), after Victor Ciorbea's departure in the government, and in 2000, when he entered the second round as favorite, but was defeated by Traian Basescu (in PD at the time). PSD remains master of Iasi

Another major defeat was recorded by PDL at Iasi, the second target of the liberal-democrat in this campaign, after the custody of the Capital City Hall.

Entered in the final race with a 6% handicap behind the PSD mayor Gheorghe Nichita, the former rector of the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza“ University Dumitru Oprea (PDL) couldn't get him the strings of the city. The results offered by the exit-polls is of 52% to 48% in favor of the actual mayor.

Besides the support of the Iasi inhabitants for PSD, Nichita benefited from the aid of the freshly elected head of county council, Constantin Simirad, from whom he tookover the mayoralty five years ago.
