Romania’s recently appointed justice minister Tudor Chiuariu is accused of interfering with anti-corruption unit’s activity.
Daniel Morar, leading Romania’s Anti-Corruption Unit or DNA accused justice minister Chiuariu of interfering with the activity of the institution he leads. He asked the Supperoir Magistrates Council or CSM to protect the prosecutor’s independence.
Morar said that two weeks ago Chiuariu called him and asked for two things: confidential information on the pending “major” cases and the temporary blocking of investigations involving political figures, while Romania’s President is suspended from.
Moraru chose to disclose the minister’s actions after Chiuariu sent a note by fax to DNA asking for the dismissal of prosecutor Doru Tulus, one of DNA’ leading investigators on reasons of “inefficiency”.
According to sources within the judiciary, the formal request is highly uncommon since the report on Tulus is only one page long, offering insufficient grounds for dismissal.
