Due to the high costs of shooting in Romania, the foreign producers trend toward Hungary and Bulgaria.
“Because of the screenplay writers strike in Hollywood, no foreign producer came to Romania this year. There are no foreign productions! Castel Film has contracts for the first semester of this year, but MediaPRO studios have no foreign productions assigned for this year”, said Vlad Păunescu, owner of Castel Film studios, during a public debate at the Minsiter of Culture and Cults (MCC).
Several Romanian film directors like Cristian Mungiu, Tudor Giurgiu, Corneliu Porumboiu and Radu Gabrea discussed the development strategy for the local film industry with the Minister of Culture, Adrian Iorgulescu.
The manager of Kodak Cinelabs, Cornelia Popescu, said that the current situation is a „disaster”. „No one comes to Romania because of the high costs of production. There already is a sharp competition coming from Sofia and Budapest, where costs are now very low, due to the fiscal relaxation approved by the governments”, said Popescu.
The situation is indirectly pressuring down on the local film production, as some of the revenues coming from local studios were later on invested in local films. „This country has an immense potential for film studios, something which no neighbouring country has, a potential which we risk loosing if the Government doesn’t back us up” Paunescu added.
