The 21 year old Romanian woman was accused of murdering a saleswoman in Italy’s capital.
The death of Vanessa Russo (aged 22) raised a dispute over the issue of illegal Romanian immigrants in Italy.
Doina Matei was arrested on Sunday night along with another Romanian a minor , Caterina I., who was a witness to the crime.
The two were identified after security camera provided images with the murder taking place. They were arrested in Tolentino region, where they had found refuge in the house of a friend
”I did not mean to kill her (…) I only wanted to defend myself” , the Romanian said after her arrest.
According to her statement she bumped into the Italian in the subway and that was the start of a conflict that ended with the accidental death of the Italian as Vanessa Russo tried to slap her and the Romanian tried to defend herself by raising the umbrella that pinched the Italian’s eye and killed her.
However, Italian prosecutors disagree with her after autopsy reports showed the puncture wound was extremely violent: the umbrella’s pointed end pierced the eye and did internal damage to the brain, causing her death
According to Italian press, the two Romanians were prostitutes.
