Carrefour's sales in Romania have grown in the first semester with 40%, to half a billion euro, supported by the retailer's expansion, process that compensated the negative effects of the variations of the foreign currencies course, announced yesterday evening the French group.
At a group level, Carrefour recorded in the first trimester, sales of 47.1 billions euro, 8% more than the level reached at the similar period of last year. "The group recorded a powerful performance, with this 8.6% growth in the conditions of constant exchange rates, in the context of a difficult economical environment", it is stated in the Carrefour communicate.
In the region, Poland recorded a 57% sales increase, while Greece and Turkey had lower performances, of 8.4% and 7.9%. In Western Europe, the sales growths were under two figures: 8.2% in Spain, and 0.9% in Italy, while in Belgium it recorded a drop of 3%.
The French group is leader on the hypermarket level in Romania, with a business figure of 866 millions euro last year. This year, Carrefour expects to pass the step of 1 billion euro.
Carrefour bought in the past autumn the supermarkets chain Artima, from the investment fund Enterprise Investors, for 55 millions euro, entering the second section of the market, after its seven years development in the hypermarket area.
