OMV Petrom, breathless in the region

The largest Romanian company doesn't rise up to it's aspiration to be a leader in South-Eastern Europe.

Mariana Gheorge, Petrom's general manager, said yesterday that the oil company's objective to become the leader of OMV's activities in South Eastern Europe and in the Caspian Sea area registered "insignificant results".

"At this moment we don't have important results from aquisitions or developments in the region, but the strategy will be reanalysed in June", said Mariana Gheorghe. This situation is happening even though Pertom is building a head-quarter in Bucharest, that will bring together all it's employees from the Capital, being OMV's second largest center after Vienna, states Gheorghe.

Last month, Wolfgang Ruttenstorfer, the OMV boss, said that the Austrians want to become Gazprom's main challangers in the South and East of Europe, by taking over MOL. Even though Petrom is the company that gives the most reserves of oil and natural gas to OMV, it seems that the expansion strategy doesn't rely on the Romanian company.

A "family" bussines

The new Petrom headquarters will cost 130 millions euro and will be completed by the end of 2009. The road infrastucture development will cost 3.2 millions euro. he building will have a 5 MW power station, a coffee shop, shops, a medical centre, a cantine and interior gardens. The auction for the construction of this building was won by Alpine, the largest independent construction company in Austria.

The German architects Anin-Jeronim-Fitilidis&Partner and the Austrian group Strabag will also take part at the project.
