Romania, 34 convictions by CEDO in one year

Over 8.600 Romanian citizens have claimed their rights in the European Court of Human Rights (CEDO) last year. The Court decided that the Romanian state has repeatedly violated its citizen's rights.

Romania is still on the third place in the top of countries with the highest number of complaints at CEDO, following Russia and Turkey, according to a statistics released yesterday by the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM).

Almost 80 percent of the complaints have been rejected because they did not specifically refer to civil rights infringement. Romanians have complained about the refusal of certain institutions to apply definitive Court decisions, the violation of the right to property, the taxation of military pensions, the violation of the right to a fair trial because of the high taxes, or imprisonment conditions in Romania.

Regarding the right to property, most of the complaints referred to situations when two or more people claim the same property with apparently legal documents.

Also, most of the Romanians have appealed to CEDO in order to receive a clear and effective compensation from Proprietatea Fund, over the confiscated properties during the communist regime.
