EVZ EDITORIAL: The ecologic "caprice"

Florian Bichir: "In Romania, the concern for the environment is still an unworthy occupation."

You will be certainly ridiculed if you get involved in protecting the environment. You will be pityed and watched as a man with the mind wandering when talking about the need for clean air, protection of the species, ecology. The term ecology comes from Greek and comes from the terms ecos - house, and logos - science, more precisely , "the science of habitat research", the study of our common house.

But who has time for such a small things when the world is mad to enrich with any price. This incredible and irresponsible race reminds me of a joke: "a quiet young man sat on the Titanic, drinking Cognac and puffing a cigar, while the vessel sink. Stunned, a passenger who try to save himself asked: mister are you crazy? Don't you see that ship is sinking? So what, it's not my ship? It's my dads", answered calmly the young man.

Our collective unconscious has more roots, which go from communism. To take care of the environment is synonymous for some with the story of the 3 R, with jars and paper which we was required to collect for recycling. In addition, the propaganda of common property - what is ours is for all of us, so of anyone - has allowed the destruction of nature. At this is added and the criminal policy of industrialization at any price of the communist regime.

Today to be an environmentalist in Romania is either a caprice or fashion. Much closer to the values of the left, ecology is regarded as being a right movement, and in particular by the conservative right, as a momentary caprice that will disappear as the "Greens" from Germany have disappeared , after they were the third largest party in the '80.

Beyond this childhood of ecology in Romania, something must be done. And as I was told by Secretary of State for the Environment, Silviu Stoica, we must change the mentality. Although it was not very visible, Minister Korodi did enough, including some campaigns, such as "SORT-every waste at its place" or "The great declutching". It is not enough, because, as I was told by Stoica, in Germany the issue has been resolved by introducing ecology into the education schedule. Through children have been, the parents were being more responsible also. In a similar manner, happened with religion in our country, many children helping their parents to learn how make the sign of cross or that is good to pray before a meal. I do not know why the German model, to include ecology in the classroom, is not taken into account. A first step was done, my daughter received this year, in the first grade, a manual entitled "About nature."

How the NGOs and environmental associations are still weak, and the interest in this area is only at a declaratory level, for the next years, the battle for the environment will have to be taken - beyond changing the mentality - by the Ministry of Environment. A ministry where hard work is made to meet the demands of the European Union. A ministry which, fortunately, was not politicized, as others. After all, ecology has no political color.
