IOANA LUPEA: "Sorin Oprescu is Ion Iliescu's stick on PSD's back".
Predicted from behind the scene by the former president and by Adrian Nastase, and financed by bussinesmen with doubtful reputation like Costel Bobic, his independent candidateship for the Capital's City Hall has only one stake: reducing PSD's candidate chances, accidentally Cristian Diaconescu, to enter the second round. The ex-director of the Municipal Hospital is the isntrument, perhaps innocent, of this group that wants Mircea Geoana out of the president seat, even if PSD will fail in the process. Before executing him in the Congress, they are publicly compromising him, in the eyes of PSD activists, political partners and of his own poll, with his image of weak leader, incapable to manage his own party. Even if the plan is going to fail, the damage agaist PSD will already be done.
The poll is attracted by Sorin Oprescu's candidateship into the game for power in PSD, between the Iliescu-Nastase couple and the Geoana-Hrebenciuc-Mitrea trio. And not only PSD's poll, probably confused and soon to be disappointed by the way the party leaders ignores it's interests. Oprescu, perceived as apolitical and competent, has, like Cristian Diaconescu, the capacity to atract votes from other parties sympathizers and from undecided. Many honest pollers can fell in the trap set by Ion Iliescu and Adrian Nastase for Mircea Geoana, seduced by the independent status and by the agreeable and familiar cunning of the Municipal director, made collegiate proffesor in a pure romanian fashion. "Cotidianul" revealed how most of his scientific papers from his contest file were not published in "Chirurgia" magazine, the etics commission at UMF "Carol Davilla" deciding, after an investigation, that Sorin Oprescu proved just "a minor superficiality in the file's achievement".
After two defeats in the competition for the Bucharest City Hall, in front of Viorel Lis and Traian basescu, Sorin Oprescu was probably seduced by Ion Iliescu and Adrian Nastase guarantees that, thi tims, he has a chance. He doesn't. He will not trip Cristian Diaconescu by entering the second round. But, he will steal votes from Diaconescu's PSD sympathizers and will force him to appear along with PSD, fact that will lower his chances in front of the right wing and undecided pollers. The "autolaunch" of the "independent" doctor makes the PDL campaign and Vasile Blaga's road to the seat held previusly by Basescu and Videanu a lot easier.
By Oprescu's candidateship, Ion Iliescu and Adrian Nastase make Traian Basescu a favour, compared only to last year's attempt to suspend him. In fact, almost the entire party is building it's own fall. Geoana allies with Voiculescu's "Antennas", that work against him and in favour of his inside enemies. Iliescu and Nastase are willing to push PSD into it's grave, only to prove that they were right. "A chance for change" is the PSD message for the comming elections, inspired from Barack Obama. Sounds more like a spell for the social-democrats.
