The Corrupters' Putsch

The Corrupters' Putsch

This is how German daily “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" characterizes the current situation in Romania.

German dailies assigned generous print space to the political turmoil in Romania after the suspension of Romania’s elected President Traian Basescu.

The prestigious daily  “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” published an editorial yesterday called “Romania’s corrupted  make a putsch” signed by  Karl-Peter Schwarz.

In the modern history of Europe, the suspension of a President for his merits, not his mistakes is unprecedented, according to the German columnist.

Romania was a special case during Communism and continues to be, even after its accession in the European Union, as the current political situation seems to prove the point for those voicing concern over Romania’s European “immaturity”.

“Romania On The Boil”, announces  „Maerkishe Allgemeine”, showing the fact that thousand of Bucharest citizens protested against President Basescu’s suspension.

The referendum puts both parts face to face but if the President wins back his office, the Parliamentary parties will have to suffer as Basescu  announced he would launch early elections.

Basescu’s popularity can be explained through the fact that he is a “people’s man” and he fights against a Government filled with millionaires.
