Blowing up the Justice budget

The prosecutors and rest of the staff at the High Court of Justice will receive retroactive payments of up to 50% of their monthly salary for the “over tiredness and neurotic conditions of work”, as decided by the institution, at the beginning of this week.

Specialists believe this could actually mean blowing up the budget of the Minister of Justice, as it would compel the institution to a payment of about 100.000 lei (30.000 euros) to every prosecutor or registrars that would ask for the benefits.

These benefits have been abolished in 2000 through a Government decision. Yet, during the past years, several prosecutors have asked in courts that the reintroduction of such benefits. Some Courts have denied the requests, while others have agreed on grounds that the abolishment of such benefits is incompatible to the Constitution and the right to property.

General attorney Codruta Kovesi has asked the Supreme Court to decide which one of these interpretations is correct. According to judicial sources, the Supreme Court judges have already decided that the reasons for the benefits still exist and thus the money should be granted. “We already have a decision that gives over 30.000 euros to a judge”, our sources say.

The Supreme Court has refused to confirm the information yesterday, because the decision has not yet been signed by all 90 judges that took part to the discussions.
