Former President's Mistake Costs The State EUR10,000

A Bucharest court decided yesterday to make the Romanian state pay EUR10,000 to former miner’s leader Miron Cozma as compensation for six months illegal imprisonment.

At the end of his mandate as President, opposition senator Ion Iliescu first pardoned Cozma then canceled his own order thus causing Cozma to spend six more months in prison illegally.

The decision was reached by the Bucharest Court after Cozma sued the state in 2004 one day after he was released from prison.

The Court only allowed a sum of EUR10,000 compared to the initial damages required by Cozma’s lawyers that rose up to EUR4 million. However, the Court’s decision is not definitive and Cozma can appeal within higher courts.
