The European Commission watches the budgetary dieficit

The European Commission is launching, today, a recommendation for Romania on the actions that should be made for avoiding a budgetary deficit of over 3% of the GDP, according to European sources quoted by Mediafax.

According to Amelia Torres, the spokesperson of the European commissar for Economy and Monetary Bussines, Joaquin Almunia, the agenda of the European Commission discussions for today includes the situation of public finances from Romania. At the end of January, Joaquin Almunia said that increase of the budgetary deficit from Romania represents a real reason of concern, and the government must target healtier budgetary goals. Asked by "Evenimentul Zilei", Daniela Daraban, the image councilor of the ministry of finance, Varujan Vosganian, said that "Romania hasn't received an official document from the European Commission".

The Bruxelles officials have three options for the member states about the budgetary deficit: opening the procedure of excessive deficit, early warning and recommendations on the budgetary policy. Most probably, the Commission will recommend Romania in order to control the deficit. About the warning it can't be an option at this moment, because in the first four months of the year the budget recorded an increase of 1.07 billions lei, representing 0.2% of the GDP. At the beginning of March, the budgetary deficit predicted for 2008 was reduced from 2.75% of the GDP to 2.3%.
