Popular Romanian coach of Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk, Mircea Lucescu, suffered a heart attack late last night and underwent surgery, after the team patron called an emergency medical squad.
The 63 year-old football manager suffered chest pains and felt ill during the recent team trainings in Switzerland.
Lucescu is now hospitalized and recovering. Both his wife and son, coach Razvan Lucescu, are by his side.
Lucescu had been feeling ill
The football technician Ionut Chirila, one of the closest persons to Lucescu, told EVZ online that the coach had heart problems the past week as well. “I just learned what has happened and I am shocked. I pray for him every second,” Chirila said. Doctors recommended a break.
Lucescu won the UEFA Cup with the Ukrainian team this year. He coached the national Romanian team and then kicked off the ball with Galatasaray, winning the European Super Cup against Real Madrid.
Under Lucescu's managership, Galatasaray qualified to quarter finals in the UEFA Champions League in the 2000-01 season for the first time, but in the quarter finals lost to Real Madrid.
