According to a report released by Consumer’s Protection, large retailers often show smaller prices on the shelf than what the customer ends up paying.
Over 5.500 customers of the supermarkets in Bucharest have sent complaints to the National Authority for Customer Protection (ANPC) because of differences between the price shown on the shelves and the one paid at the cashier.
Over 50.000 complaints were made to ANPC last year alone because of such irregularities. Thus, ANPC has proposed the retailers to introduce a program that ensures customers of fair product scanning.
So far, the program was adopted by the Metro cash&carry chains, by Selgros and Praktiker. Any unpleasant surprise should be avoided if the customers are welcomed by a note that states “The pointed price is the paid price”, when entering a supermarket.
At least that is what the National Association of Product Coding GS1 in Romania promises. The association provides counseling to supermarkets for about 400 euros per month so that no errors should occur.
