Snowballs in full summer

The snow is heroically standing at Balea Lake, where foreigners come especially to see it in the middle of the summer.

At Balea Lake, even now, close to July, the snow is still big enough for a good fight. Although the May temperatures have melted it rapidly, the snow still has big heights here and there.

As you turn right form DN1 to Balea Lake, a sign warns you that the road is passable only until Balea Falls. In reality, things are totally different. The heights addicted do not care about the signs and go until close to the edge of the lake, at over 2000 meters altitude.

Cars from Calarasi, Galati, Constanta or Bucharest can be seen passing the Transfagarasan daily, even if this officially opens on the 15th of June.

The road gives you the chills on some sectors and that is because in those segments you can only drive on one lane, because of the snow. “My God this is beautiful! I’ve never seen anything like it. Passing through three meters high walls in the middle of the summer is fantastic” say two of the young travelers.

On the plateau close to Balea Lake Hut, a family is having the time of their live. Ernst Sutoris and his wife are Romanians who left o Germany 15 years ago. Every time they come back to the country, they go by Balea Lake, and know they brought their two children along.
