PSD changed its tactic against Romania’s President. The Social Democrats want to diminish the President’s prerogatives and say he should be elected by the Parliament.
“Traian Basescu must be Romania’s last transition period President. We must plan what kind of President we have and what role we give to this future President”, said Mircea Geona, president of the opposition party PSD. He added that the party’s leadership will form a group to find a solution for modifying the Constitution to change the President’s prerogatives.
Indirectly, Geoana proposed that Romania should switch from a semi-presidential republic to a parliamentary one although the only clear line of reasoning for this course of action was to strip the President of some of his attributes.
However, the same request for modifying the Constitution was made last summer by….President Traian Basescu. He asked then that the relation between President and the PM should be regulated by either turning Romania into a parliamentary republic or a presidential republic .
