Local elections, weighed in soccer

The Executive has decided that local elections will take place on the 1st and the 15th of June. Thus, the Government managed to avoid placing the elections in the week before Easter.

Still, the election dates will come along the first matches played by Romania’s national football team in the European Championship. So, could the games influence the local canvass? And if so, will this influence the politicians or the overall presence in the scrutiny?

“The last week of the campaign will be affected”, analyst Bogdan Theodorescu, believes. It is unlikely that soccer fans would choose to watch political debates rather than the games.

Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu was the first to warn about the pottential influence the football championship will have over the local elections. Tariceanu also stated, several times, that he will try to avoid this situation.

The decision will be officially issued next week, after talks with the Social Democrat Party, who insists that the dates should be moved on the 8th and 22nd of June.
