Free Internet on the streets of Bucharest

Until 2010, people living in Bucharest will be able to connect to the Internet in any area. Piata Universitatii is the latest conquest.

The free Internet in Piata Universitatii had 487 unique users, only a week after the launching of the system. Last Saturday there were 17 concomitant users, although the system had not been officially launched, thus not having a powerful promotion.

The first two hot spots were installed in Piata Universitatii at the end of last month. One of them is in front of the National Theatre, and the other near the Coltea Policlinic. The next will be put into function by the end of this month and they will cover the area of the fountain near the Geography Faculty and the RATB station across the headquarters of BCR.   On the net in Piata Presei and Cismigiu

With a transfer speed of 100 Mb metropolitan and 1,5 Mb for outside, the net is designed in such way that it can sustain hundreds of users. It can be accessed by laptop users, PDA users, Portable Playstation and Mobile Phones. Most of them have a wireless adapter with which the connection is made.

In Bucharest there are 44 wireless areas. Among the next targeted areas there are Piata Presei Libere and Cismigiu Park. The company representatives foresee that the entire Capital will be covered by 2010. Nationally, 120 hot spots will be installed by the end of this year, with a 100.000 euros investment.
