EVZ Editorial: The wonder kid and the political menagerie

FLORIAN BICHIR: "The political temptation is present since the world's creation, and Romania couldn't be any different".

Just after the events in December '89 - in which poets like Ioan Alexandru, Mircea Dinescu, and actors Ion Caramitru and Sergiu Nicolaescu played an important role - the problem of "civil society" involvement was advanced. Originating, probably, from an old German saying: "if you don't get involved, don't be surprised if you will be led by stupid people". In 1990, on an independent list, Octavian Paler, Mircea Dinescu, Andrei Pleşu and Gabriel Liiceanu tried their luck. It was their chance not to reach the norm...

Later, another intelectual group forced Romania's political destiny. Together with Nicolae Marasescu's PAC, Ştefan Augustin Doinaş, Alexandru Paleologu and Stelian Tănase entered the Senate. A last impulsion came from the right wing group formed around Varujan Vosganian, the regreted Laurenţiu Ulici, Paul Ghiţiu and Adrian Iorgulescu.

Excepting Ileana Stana Ionescu, who represented the Italian minority, the political parties, desperate by the intelectuals refusal, turned their attention to stars. No matter the field of activity - renowned artists, popular athletes - the stars were recruited for their emphasis. Capable to attract, like a vacuum, votes from the peolpe that grew annoyed by politics. Florin Piersic was offered the Presidential candidateship, coaches like Anghel Iordanescu and legend goalkeeper Helmuth Duckadam were called for. Boxer Mihai Leu left the steering wheel to join the conservatives, and Leonard Doroftei is a close friend and supporter of Cozmin Gusa.

After Irina Loghin and Ion Dolanescu moved to PRM, singer Adrian Enache ended up as first runner for a Senate seat by PTD, led by Raj Tunaru! Elena Carstea was member of the ephemeral Romanian National Party of Virgil Magureanu.

Fed up with staying aside and being eclipsed by his father, Ionut Dolanescu, accustomed with "The folklore counter-attacks", passed to the ecologists, to the Green Party.

The last phase of the stars hunt was recorded yesterday, when Adrian The Wonder Kid announced that he will run on the PSD lists for the Local Council of the Ilfov village, Stefanesti.

PSD Ilfov president Gabriel Oprea said that the singer from Stefanesti is a "landmark" for this place and he is praised by the inhabitants.

Adrian The Wonder Kid (a.k.a. De Vito) was present at the nominalisation of PSD candidates for the Ilfov county local elections. Where, obviously he sang a "manea".

This time, the "manelization" of Romania's politics is complete. Goodbye to the political class reform, if people without any administration or political knowledge are called for. I have nothing against Adrian The Wonder Kid, but if there really is a demand for stars in politics, why not also call for the porn queen, the bearded lady or for "professor" Hancu.
