Democrats decided yesterday to take part in Euro-elections alone, without the Liberals, meaning the end of the Alliance which won the 2004 presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Emil Boc, president of the Democratic Party motivated his party’s decision by saying that the Democrats and the Liberals are affiliated to different European parties.
At the same time, the Romania’s President, Traian Basescu, expressed his regret that the Liberals decided to support the opposition’ s efforts to pass a motion in the Parliament on organizing a referendum on dismissing him.
Therefore, the Alliance that lasted a tumultuous three years of bickering , dissolved .
EVZ shows a few of the achievements and also “black spots” of the recently defunct Alliance:
The EU accession: The Alliance fulfilled its promises made in the electoral campaign to speed up political and economical reforms, so that EU will embrace Romania, as of January 1, 2007. Live Well! Romanians’ average income hiked some 40% and the economic growth was some 8% in 2006.
Truth and Justice: PM Tariceanu’s interventions in justice to help his friend, oil magnate Dinu Patriciu and Basescu’s silence in the matter (Tariceanu sent him a note asking to help Patriciu) are definitely not in favor of justice .
The large Center-Right Party : the fusion between the two allied parties did not occur, because each of the parties wanted to be in the spotlight .
