The best day of the year for the leu

The leu has reached yesterday, a new maximum against the euro. The National Bank quoted the European currency at 3.4763 lei, with 2.6 bani less than Tuesday.

The maximum precedent of this year against the euro was achieved at the beginning of the week, after the announcement of Mugur Isărescu, the central bank governor, on the revision of the inflation prognosis for this year from 6% to 6.6%. Monday, BNR announced a course of 3.5010 lei for one euro.

A lower level than the one recorded yesterday was set by BNR on 24 December 2007, when the parity leu / euro was of 3.4673 units. The appreciation of the leu has been driven by sales of currency and by the interests from the monetary market, argue the dealers.

"All currencies in the region have opened the session by rising against the euro in the context of the decline of oil prices to the minimum of the last three months and after Fed's decision to maintain the interest rate of monetary policy to 2%. Only the leu has maintained its growth, supported by high interest from the money market", said the dealer of a bank, quoted by Mediafax. On the inter banking market, the first transactions from yesterday were concluded at a course of 3.4955 lei / euros and the sales of foreign currencies lowered quotations to 3.4820 lei / euros. The exchange rate ended the day at 3.476-3.478 lei / euro.
