If the Parliament decides to suspend Romania’s President Traian Basescu, the Senate’s Speaker Nicolae Vacaroiu will take over the affairs of the state as an interim.
Basescu announced he would not come to the Parliament although he delayed his visit to Macedonia. Also, MPs asked TV and radio stations to broadcast debates live no mater how long the transmission will be.
If PSD’s proposal will receive the vote of the majority of MPs, respectively 233, the President is suspended for a period of 30 days while a referendum must be organized.
During this time, Basescu’s attributions will be taken over by Vacaroiu. According to the Constitution, the Senate’s Speaker is the first option for ensuring an interim leadership after the President is suspended.
However, Basescu has one more option: he declared that if the Parliament suspends him, he would resign and launch early elections.
