Romania has six months to modify its legislation on the first car registration tax, according to European Commissioner on Taxation, Laszlo Kovacs.
Kovacs said that Romania doesn’t solve the situation, Brussels will address the issue to the European Justice Court .
"Once it reaches the European Court, Romania risks repeating Hungary’s mistake ", the Commissioner added.
Hungarian authorities were obligated to change legislation and pay EUR41 million compensations to citizens who paid the first car registration tax.
The Commissioner underlined the three major problems with the tax:: it is discriminatory , it does not relate the car’s length of service with the degree of pollution it makes and only covers a limited period from the lifespan of a car .
