Daimler avoids Cluj

The German car producer Daimler gave up the idea of building a factory at Cluj, announcing that will extend it's searches outside Romania and Poland, according to sources in the company, quoted by "Handelsblatt" and "Forbes".

The company's representatives have not stated the motive behind this solution. A final decison will be taken in the second trimester. The German officials said, at the end of January, that the car constructor intends to open a Mercedes Benz factory in Cluj or in the Polish town of Wroclaw. Russia, a magnet for investments

Daimler, the producer of brands like Mercedes, Maybach or Smart, had always been reluctant concerning a major investment in Eastern Europe, despite the Volkswagen in the Czech Republic, with Skoda, according to "Financial Times".

The accelerated evolution of Russia's automobile market, recorded in the last years, determined the raise of Eastern Europe attractivity as market and production centre.Daimler is present on the Romanian auto market since 2001, with the car components supplier Star Transmission, based in Cugir. In Romania are also active two other major car produces, Renault and Ford.
